Day on the Hill
April
24, 2007
In
your lifetime, you have an opportunity to make a real difference
only every so often. Now is one of those times!
Now, you have an opportunity … and an obligation to yourself,
your industry, and the customers who depend on you.
Governor Rendell has proposed at
least 47 initiatives that will dramatically reshape the
individual and small group health insurance market and the
health care system that exists now. Proposed reforms have
the potential of making your book of business disappear because
it means a bigger role for the state and a diminished role for
you.
By sitting on the sidelines, not
getting involved, you let others carry your water. You lose by
not being a player. You lose as a taxpayer, but more important,
you stand to lose your livelihood as some want to move closer to
a single payer system that will not utilize agents. Others
demand their perceived entitlement of government-sponsored
health care. Their voice is heard by the legislators loud and
clear. Is Your Voice Being Heard?
Here’s the deal. We need support
from more than the usual brokers who make their voices heard for
all of us so we can make money. We need a larger presence in
Harrisburg now! Most of us in the industry are hard workers. We
naturally focus first on our own day to day business, and not on
the legislative side. But we need to understand that our
business is the legislature’s business. Bottom line is
that to be able work on your business means that you have to
have a business to work AND a private sector system of health
insurance.
The choice is yours. Prepare an
exit strategy for your business or support “Day on the Hill” on
April 24, 2007. It Is That Important!

Dear
PGH-AHU Member:
If you
were in attendance at our chapter event last Wednesday you
heard first hand the details of Governor Rendell’s “Cover
All Pennsylvanians” proposal. A very notable detail was the
confirmation that there is no intention of having insurance
agents market/distribute the product. This is hardly a
surprise but it nonetheless confirms the belief that
so-called “Universal Healthcare” proposals are not going to
be agent friendly.
Do you
think the Cover All Pennsylvanians proposal is a good one?
Do you have alternatives that you believe we should be
considering? Do you think CAP has the potential to hurt
your business? If so, it would be highly advisable for you
to consider coming to this State Day on the Hill!
The actual
registrations are being handled through Vince Phillips’
office. However, I need to know who is going as soon as
possible so that I can begin work on making hotel and dinner
reservations for the night of Monday April 23rd.
Depending on the number of people who commit to attending I
may also need to coordinate transportation arrangements.
Please let me know your intentions as soon as possible.
It will be
easy to make excuses for not attending. It is likely
Highmark’s July renewal rates will be released by then and
we will all be getting geared up for busy season. I am on
vacation the week prior so the timing of this event stinks
for me. I’ve got two little kids and a spouse who works
full-time. I have a very important presentation on Thursday
the 26th. Most importantly, I may have to miss
a Pens playoff game!
Folks,
this will be my 6th straight State Day trip, all
of which I have coordinated. Step up to the plate and join
me and some of our other dedicated members for a great
event. You don’t need to have any past lobbying experience
to be effective, just a belief in our system and a passion
to improve it. Thanks in advance for your support!
